Dyscordia is a six piece Metal band from West-Flanders Belgium who’s ready to release their debut / self financed EP entitled "Reveries" at the end of November 2010. Within the band’s ranks you will find back a bunch of high skilled musicians - each one of these guys played in other acts before, a few names are: Artrach, Battalion, Gwyllion, Impedigon, Anesthesy. So actually Dyscordia arose from the ashes of all these but believe me when I say that you ain’t hear nothing yet - the best has yet to come!

Speaking for myself, I really liked the band Artrach because of their familiar touches with US Proggressive Metal. I'm completely hooked on the almighty forces of US Metal since the very early eighties, Artrach were able to fulfil the most of my desires. Especially their latest output called "...And In Fate We Rest" was a great result of Progressive Metal played in a very technical way. A while ago, when the news linger on that they were no longer active, it did not feel good. Why? Well, Artach was a great band with a lot of potential to me - they were totally able to compete with the rest of the world wide Progmetal scene for sure but unfortunately it could not have been. But there is hope for the future it seems...

Three Artrach ex-members are back with a vengeance and surrounded by three other well skilled players they will slice back even harder and much better than ever before. A while ago, bassist Wouter aka Noteleire let me know about his new band Dysordia - he also told me about a few songs that were added to their official homepage. First there was a song called ‘Black Clown’ followed by a second one entitled ‘The Empty Room’. While checking out the first one I was truly astonished - started with a flammable guitar riff of Guy Commeene, the final result of this track seem awesome to me. Based on a pure technical way of acting, ‘Black Clown’ had a lot to offer. The awesome clear vocals of Piet Overstijns still pleases me endlessly - yeah, sometimes he takes me by the throat with a nice pair of high pitched screams and again... as US Metal defender, I'm completey pleased with this way vocal use. Fantastic technical guitar tactics to swallow, heavy loaded brilliant bass lines, double bass drum works,- nothing but great words to tell about a song line this.

But I was curious about the rest of the EP as well - in advantage I got the opportunity to check them all out and according to my opinion - "Reveries" from Belgian based Dyscordia sounds very promising! Each song - different character... As for the vocal way, they use a perfect combination of both clear (sometimes high pitched) and death grunts. I’d rather prefer the clear vocals but that’s a more personal question you know. I have to admit that based on the vocals only, I'm a really pleased individual! Every now and than, the songs have a dark character which is a good point to me. Damn right, all the guitar moves presented throughout the entire EP are made of a very high quality. Killer riffs superior, top-notch solo works - this means world class to me and allows me to say that Guy Commeene stands on top of the Belgian list of guitar players for sure! His way of pulling string speaks to my imagination so... I'm pleased - again!

So people - Dyscordia’s is about to release their debut EP "Reveries" within a few weeks (read end November 2010). Fans of technical / melodic and very powerful Progressive Metal with both clear and death grunt like vocals - go take a pre-listening HERE. On the fourth of December 2010 they will share the stage with bands like Primal Fear, Revamp, Iron Mask and more during the next edition of Frostrock, a festival that’ll take place in Kuurne - Belgium.

I hope Dyscordia will find the right people to catch a major record deal really soon - I see a very promising bunch of excellent musicians able to survive the competition with tons of other acts and yes, I'm sure they will defend their own ground with a lot of Belgian mighty Metal force!! Flanders (in Belgium, yes) has spawned many great bands, though not all of them managed to acquire the deserved recognition and fame. Some of the last jewels in the region of Kortrijk are ARTRACH and GWYLLION. The first put out three demo CDs, one better than the other. The potential was clearly there to go for it big time. Sadly, ARTRACH had to quit its activities last year. GWYLLION put out a diamond of an album, "The Edge Of All I Know". But as the search for a new female vocalist has been suspended, the band sort of split (not really, but GWYLLION is not doing anything, so each is free to pursue other activities) and three other bands were linked: DYSCORDIA (with members of a.o. ARTRACH and GWYLLION), FIREFORCE and IMMANENT DISTANCE. The idea for DYSCORDIA was born last year, if my knowledge is right and the band was formed earlier this year (2010).

The music: Progressive Power Metal or what you could call ARTRACH-meets-GWYLLION. Add a more aggressive touch and more technical influences and it's not just like any ProgPower band. That became clear after having heard pre-production versions like that of the track "Black Clown". "Reveries" is the title of the band's first release, a self-release as no label has been found yet to sign the band. But it shouldn't take that long, should it? The MCD/EP contains 6 tracks, totalling a playtime of a good 30 minutes. And it's not over before you know it, as the lads packed the songs with lots of music. The material was recorded at the Road Mark Studios in Belgium and mixed and mastered by Wouter and Martijn Debonnet. Guitarist Guy Commeene took care of the artwork.

It all starts with the title track, which goes for instant satisfaction. No intro, no building, a direct attack of power and melodies. Drumming is at midtempo, but Wouter manages to add more hits than a standard pattern. This is good, as it shows his skills and somehow the music also lends to such activeness. Both vocal types, clean and grunts, are given time here, though it's Piet's voice that prevails. The verses are definitely calmer than the chorus, that's without question. The toms and clean guitar help to create a certain atmosphere that is welcome after the aformentioned start. "Reveries" is a very diverse track, where enough catchiness was added. The solos are saved for the second half of the song and at some point there's even two of them, which helps explain why 3 guitarists are in the line-up. However, drums form a key element here. Is this the best Wouter has done so far?

"Locked Within" is a little slower, darker and more atmospheric, at least in its intro. The overall feel is a sad one, as Piet's singing indicate, as does the music. Even in the chorus there's not really a sign of happiness. Stefan's grunts cannot change that and have to follow suit. And yet the music is quite powerful. You could, in a way, compare this feeling with GWYLLION's "A Thousand Words". This contrast is well done, but I wouldn't mind the music taking indeed a more calmer direction. Drumwise it sounds as if Wouter is refraining himself. Again, just an impression, but on the other hand it doesn't have to be all that technical everytime. Better to drum in function of the music than try to show off and throw in fills that don't really fit anyway. By which I'm not saying that Wouter doesn't know what he's doing. Just to be on the clear side. Vocally both clean and growls are used and the latter even become the leading ones for a while. Th atmospheric keyboards deserved more attention, in my opinion. Now they're too far in the back. Despite a playtime of under 5 minutes, DYSCORDIA crammed so much music in here that one really needs to take his/her time to grasp it all, as it might become a bit tedious after a first listen.

The first song that was put online was "Black Clown", first the pre-production, the final result. It contains a guitar lead that is so damn catchy and tastey, one could never get tired of it. Also present are double bass power and Piet singing with a more rough-edged voice. Musically it's totally GWYLLION, only with a male vocalist. Grunts are done in the bridge, while Piet's cleans reclaim the throne in the chorus and Stefan's grunts are pushed to the back. Straight-forward melodic Metal is what is brought then. Three guitarists, it must be for a reason, if not just for the solo moments. And yes, it's precisely this (the guitarwork, incl. the solos) that is the center of attention, although the drums cannot be ignored, since they were put high in the mix. Quality material from start to finish! Now, how about a resting point? The intro of "Ache Of Hearts" certainly fits the description (calm, atmospheric, clean guitar plucking, ...). But then the power breaks loose, slowly and dangerous, shifting into straight-forward Heavy Metal.... when everything all of a sudden stops! For the clean verses, of course. I have to say, that sudden halt is indeed sudden. The song itself is another sad one and the grunts help to stress the drama of it all. The music is not as variable as before and therefore flows very well, which in turn helps easen the listening experience. The solos are well done, as usual. So, yes, another solid track in the bank.

And when "Ache Of Hearts" is put to rest, the blasting melodies of "The Empty Room" come thundering out of the speakers. That resting point is still far away, it seems. Melodic guitarwork is key, dual even. Grunts and clean vocals again, like before, and Piet's taking the lead...like before. Probably because Stefan also has to concentrate on his guitarwork. Speaking of music, Power Metal! Woohoo! Talk about not sounding like the preceding songs. But it doesn't last that long. When the break kicks in, someone needs to explain to me what the idea was. There's just the drums, clean vocals and a clean guitar. This combo sounds so out of place, it even came into view too sudden. Judging by the return of the chorus much later, this strange part is either the middle-section (again, why so different?) or it's the second half of the song. While everything is well executed and sounds very good, I found it hard to see a structure here, so to speak. There's a bit too much music in the 6 and a half minutes of playtime. The song's too active, too diverse, to energetic to be considered mere background music. Whether or not multiple listens will help to appreciate it better is to be seen. "Realm Of Night" ends the "Reveries" with straight-forward Metal, where grunts get a little more attention again. To stay inline with the other songs, this is another powerful track, with diversity in terms of clean stuff. There are uptempo outbreaks, though, for which the drums take the main responsability.

Discord, as the dictionary says:
"a (1) : a combination of musical sounds that strikes the ear harshly
(2) : dissonance
b : a harsh or unpleasant sound "

But it can also refer to the Greek goddess Eris (see Wikipedia), who was also known as Discordia. This new band made DYSCORDIA of it, as there are already several bands out there called DISCORDIA. What does this new Belgian band has to offer? Two vocalists, three guitarists (like IRON MAIDEN, allowing for more power and melody), lots of diversity musically... all given a very solid sound that is perfect for this kind of Progressive Power Metal. Joining forces (ARTRACH and GWYLLION) was somehow bound to happen, as both bands played in the same league. The fusion resulted in a more extreme version of either of the seperate elements. The band is on the right path towards Benelux and European domination, no question about that. However, there are still some minor details to take care of, as not each song is bull's eye. To keep it short: "Reveries" is a release to be very proud of, especially considering the material was written on a relatively short notice, even if each member has years of experience behind him. So, do purchase this EP, support your Metal scene and help launch another Belgian band into Europe and abroad.

The refreshing and interesting about Dyscordia lies in the fact that they do everything their selves. The guitarplayer and the drummer mixed and mastered this EP and the lead guitarist designed the fantastic artwork.

The duality between both guitars and the rather unique style of singing makes this EP very worthwhile, whereas the sound in its whole often refers to IRON MAIDEN and even ARCH ENEMY (in some solos) and is just a classic example of how melodic metal should sound anno 2010.

Much like GWYLLIONs debut (with the brothers Debonnet in a leading role as well) this EP has freewheeling guitars and melodies written all over it. The uptempo (power) melodic metal is entertaining from start to finish and all instruments are heard clearly and have their own space on this silverling. The band has skills, creativity and talent enough to make it and they should start working on a full-length pretty soon as a lot of people will be lingering for more after hearing ‘Reveries’.

Just a perfect blend of melody and aggression, combined with the will of all bandmembers to make something out of this band. Too bad it’s merely an EP instead of a fullblown LP.

Dit zeskoppig gezelschap uit West Vlaanderen presenteert hier trots hun eerste ep. Als ik het juist heb, hebben de leden hun sporen al verdiend bij andere bands zoals Gwyllion, Artrach en Impedigon. Voor degenen die deze bands niet mochten kennen, denk ietwat in de richting van progressieve power metal, waar je ook Dyscordia mag bij neerpoten. Muzikaal zit alles snor en de songs kennen een goede en spannende opbouw en door de goeie productie is alles duidelijk van elkaar te onderscheiden. Vooral de solo’s zijn bij momenten om van te smullen! Zanger Piet beschikt over een schitterende stem. Hierdoor vind ik het soms jammer van de grunts en screams die de band hier en daar gebruikt. Best wel eens leuk voor de variatie, maar wat mij betreft mag dit (nog) wat meer naar de achtergrond verschoven worden en ben ik tevreden met alleen die klassebak van een Piet te horen! De zes songs die ‘Reveries’ telt zijn goed voor een half uur luisterplezier en nergens hebben we er aan gedacht om een song te skippen, wat de dag van vandaag ook al een pluspunt is! Verplichte luistertips zijn het schitterende titelnummer en het ronduit fantastische ‘The Empty Room’. Eindconclusie is dat Dyscordia trots mag zijn op hun eersteling en ik ben alvast benieuwd naar hoe deze band zich in de toekomst gaat ontwikkelen. Ja, hier is er weer een; zes jonge honden die het willen gaan maken in metal land. Vanuit Vlaanderen onderneemt Dyscordia middels een geheel zelf geproduceerde EP ‘Reveries’ een poging en eerlijk is eerlijk dat doen ze nog niet eens zo gek. Ondanks de wat rommelige productie (de drums klinken wat onderversterkt en waterig) fabriceerde deze band een leuke melodieuze maar ook agressieve mix die mij bands als Opeth en Blind Guardian voorbij deed trekken. De afwisseling tussen cleane zang en volle grunts past goed bij de redelijk complexe heavy prog metal (hadden we die al?) en de conclusie is dat Dyscordia best fier mag zijn op haar eersteling en de zes tracks die erop te vinden zijn. Bewaar een paar nummers voor een volledig album zou ik zeggen, dan kun je die tot echte wasdom laten komen.

Wat zeldzamer om te spruiten uit Vlaamse bodem, maar Dyscordia is alvast een nieuwe noemer op de progressieve/power metal-markt. De heren op zich zijn binnen de metalwereld niet nieuw: met leden uit diverse heavy en power metal-bands en zelfs een death metal-band uit het verleden, kan de debuut-EP Reveries haast niet anders dan verfrissend en afwisselend zijn.

Wetende dat dit schijfje werd uitgebracht in eigen beheer en twee van de heren verantwoordelijk zijn voor de mix en uiteindelijke mastering, kan hier toch wel van een sterk staaltje gesproken worden (al hadden de laatste 20 seconden wel geknipt mogen worden). De band brengt een geheel dat aan heel wat invloeden doet denken maar in een uniek jasje werd gestoken. Diepgaande vocalen in de lijn van Sonata Arctica/Stratovarius/Blind Guardian worden in dialoog geplaatst met de grunts van Stefan waardoor het zangduet soms wat doet denken aan het Vlaamse Thurisaz, maar dan met clean vocals in plaats van screams. Op sommige momenten neigt de stem wat meer richting Hammerfall/Manowar, wat over het algemeen de grootste afknapper is op deze EP. De muziek op zich ligt ook wat in de lijn van Sonata Arctica/Stratovarius maar brengt toch wat melodieuze variaties, The Empty Room brengt op die manier wat meer Iron Maiden/Children of Bodom-gitaarlijnen. Hoogtepunt van dit werkje is zondermeer Ache of Hearts: Prachtige solo’s, een gecontroleerd en diepgaand gebruik van de stem met een knappe samenzang en een knappe muzikale atmosfeer.

Een leuk allegaartje dat voor de progressieve power metal-fan toch wel leuk is om mee te nemen. Uit de touragenda blijkt ook dat de heren meteen stevig zijn overgegaan tot het houden van optredens, misschien een band om dit jaar toch eens te bezichtigen.

Speziell in Europa gibt es auch anno 2011 noch immer Länder, die mit kräftiger und härterer Musik nicht gerade strotzen. Oder kennt jemand von euch bekannte Pioniere des Metal-Genres, die beispielsweise aus dem nicht weit entfernten Belgien stammen? Nein? Ich bis vor einigen Tagen jedenfalls nicht. Doch diesen Malus will das Sextett von DYSCORDIA nun beheben und mit der 6-Track-E.P. "Reveries" den Power-Melodic-Metal-Thron zumindest ihres Landes erklimmen.

Schnelle, kräftige und leicht aggressive Passagen treffen hier auf majestätische, mit Gefühl ausgetüftelte Melodien. Sie schaffen innerhalb dieser sechs Songs eine große Variabilität und lassen "Reveries" nicht langweilig, geschweige denn langatmig wirken. Am deutlichsten merkt man dies am explodierenden Titeltrack. Herausragend finde ich hierbei die bodenständigen Vocals, die dem Song den nötigen Schliff und gleichzeitig der Truppe ihre Eigenständigkeit verleihen. Die Gitarren geben dem kompletten Sound darüber hinaus eine gewisse Kälte, obwohl dieser dabei doch in die allseits beliebte Power-Metal-Schublade geordnet werden kann. Dies spiegelt sich sowohl in langsamen, beinahe schon balladesken Songs ('Ache Of Hearts'), als auch in den bandtypischen Hymnen wie beispielsweise 'Black Clown' oder das abschließende 'Realm Of Night' wieder.

Es bleibt festzuhalten, dass die Jungs von DYSCORDIA Songs auf diese E.P. gepresst haben, die das große Potential besitzen, sich für lange Zeit in den Gehörgängen festzusetzen. Viele Passagen einzelner Songs haften sich fest ein, wodurch die Platte bei jedem Durchlauf erneut viel Spaß bereitet. Zudem besitzen sie, nicht zuletzt dank der für diesen Sektor etwas ungewöhnlichen Vocals, einen hohen Wiedererkennungswert, sowie ein enormes Spektrum an Abwechslung, ohne die man in dieser Branche heutzutage kaum noch Fuß fassen kann.

Ich bin richtig angetan von "Reveries" und hoffe, dass DYSCORDIA diese selbst gelegte Messlatte bei zukünftigen Veröffentlichungen noch erreichen oder gar toppen können. Mit einer gehörigen Portion Melodie, kräftigen Gitarrenläufe und einer gewissen Prise nordischer Kälte sind die Weichen für zukünftige Heldentaten jedenfalls gelegt.

En we hebben weer een debuut te pakken. De eerste release van de Kortrijkse band Dyscordia is uit en heet Reveries. Deze EP kent leden van bands als Battalion, Varangian, Gwyllion en Artrach. De muziek is een mix van al deze bovenstaande bands.

Dyscordia is een nog jonge band die net zijn eerste EP heeft uitgebracht. De leden hebben allemaal al een aardig verleden bij andere bands en het is veilig om te zeggen dat er bij de verschillende leden een compleet andere geschiedenis aan hangt. Er zijn wat overlappingen maar iedereen heeft wel zijn eigen route gemaakt. Al die verschillende ervaringen zijn meegenomen en in één album gestopt, zo iets kan alle kanten op gaan.

Reveries heeft me wel verrast. Verhalen over leden die allemaal een eigen weg hebben afgelegd heb ik al vaker gehoord en in de meeste gevallen komt daar een mix uit die je je ergste vijanden niet aan wilt doen. Dyscordia heeft daarentegen wel een leuk geluid dat tegelijkertijd zowel fris als vertrouwd is. De band mixt op dit album zware riffs met melodie, kopstem met grunts en trage tempo's met snelle tempo's en ze weten dit vreemd genoeg nog eens goed uit te voeren ook, hulde!

Ieder nummer is een avontuur op zich, je weet nooit waar het heen kan gaan en hoe het zal eindigen en altijd wordt er met de muziek een verhaal verteld waardoor het heel anders klinkt dan de stukken daarvoor. De muziek verveelt ook niet, door de mix van uitersten blijft het interessant en vraag je je af wat er nog allemaal op het album zal langskomen.

De lengte van deze EP is ook perfect. 32 minuten is voor een EP vrij lang (meestal zijn ze 20 minuten) maar net kort genoeg om voor de muziek spannend te blijven. Door deze lengte heb ik al zin in een volgend album. Het leuke is dat er weinig echte vernieuwingen zijn, nooit een moment van: “wauw waar zijn die gasten nu mee bezig” maar ze mixen zo de stijlen dat het aardig eenvoudig lijkt.

De stijl ligt ergens tussen power- en deathmetal in. Dit varieert per nummer en per moment al denk ik dat fans van beide genres best wel eens van Reveries zouden kunnen genieten, zolang je maar open staat voor wat afwisseling.

Een debuut als dit is natuurlijk erg leuk maar de grote vraag is wat er hierna komt. Als Dyscordia deze kwaliteit vast weet te houden dan kan er wel eens wat moois uit groeien. Een stijl met een potentieel groot publiek en een stijl om mogelijkheid om op veel verschillende festivals te kunnen spelen.

Wenn man dem 2001 verstorbenen Douglas Adams und seinem großartigen fünfteiligen Allzweck-Ratgeber "Per Anhalter durch die Galaxis" Glauben schenken darf, ist "Belgien" das mit Abstand schlimmste Schimpfwort im gesamten bekannten Universum. Auf der internationalen Metal-Landkarte muss man das gleichnamige europäische Land hingegen mit der Lupe suchen. So sind mir auch die im Beipackzettel erwähnten GWYLLION, ARTRACH, VARANGIAN, RHYMES OF DESTRUCTION, ANESTHESY und IMPEDIGON kein Begriff, aus deren Mitgliedern sich die Besetzung dieses Prog-Kollektivs rekrutiert.

Die meiste Zeit über bewegen sich DYSCORDIA in Up-Tempo-Gefilden. So schafft man es trotz der überschaubaren Spielzeit von etwas mehr als einer halben Stunde eine Vielzahl an Ideen zu verbraten und daraus sechs abwechslungsreiche und vielschichtige Songs zu stricken. Den Grundstock dieser progressiven Mixtur bilden Power-Metal-kompatible Melodien, ohne dass man dabei auch nur annähernd auf die Kitsch-Schiene abdriften würde. Mit einigen Growl- und Knüppel-Passagen stößt die Band teilweise aber auch in ähnliche Gefilde vor wie die Dänen MERCENARY oder sogar die schwedischen Altmeister OPETH. Mit dem überagenden Songwriting der letztgenannten können DYSCORDIA aber nicht mithalten.

Die große Stärke von DYSCORDIA ist ihre musikalische Vielseitigkeit, die aber dennoch stets die individuelle Handschrift der Band erkennen lässt. Bemerkenswert ist in dieser Hinsicht vor allem der Opener und Titeltrack "Reveries", der mit geradezu folkig anmutenden Refrain-Harmonien und aggressiven Growl-Akzenten leichte Parallelen zu AMON AMARTH erkennen lässt. Ansonsten überzeugt besonders die düstere Atmosphäre, die alle Songs atmen. Spieltechnik und Produktion sind solide, aber nicht überwältigend, das Songwriting wirkt streckenweise noch ein wenig roh und ungeordnet. Insgesamt ist "Reveries" aber ein Einstand nach Maß und hat die Aufmerksamkeit von allen Fans düsterer Prog-Sounds redlich verdient.

Dat Dyscordia onbekend in de oren klinkt kan best en toch is het een band van eigen bodem. De band telt leden van Battalion, Varangian, Gwyllion en Artrach.

Meng die bands en je krijgt bovenstaande band. Het lijkt wel alsof elk lid inspraak heeft gehad. Elk nummer vormt een verhaal met verrassende wendingen, waarvan je nooit weet hoe het zal uitdraaien. De combinatie tussen zware riffs en melodie, kopstem en erg zware grunts zorgt voor de nodige variatie. Dat maakt het album best boeiend, zodat de zes nummers leuk blijven om naar te luisteren.

Twin Symbiosis CD

It took a little longer than expected, but finally the wait is over! Dyscordia released their first full length album at the end of March 2013, and once again, it’s proven that it was worth the wait! This ‘Twin Symbiosis’ reflects perfectly how progressive and heaviness melt together, how innovative music is allowed to have harsh vocals without losing the attention of the melody. By far, the members of Dyscordia surpassed their own skills, and once again we can all be proud on this Belgian band! The album opens with ‘Dreamcatcher Tree’ which is a short intro, followed by a first highlight ‘The Empty Room’. This track speeds up with a very catchy melody line. Once the harsh vocals of Stefan Segers drop in, you will be surprised about the heaviness of this performance. The clean vocals of Piet Overstijns interfere, and lift this song to a memorable track! Halfway this opener is a break where Piet transcend himself, followed by a duel between clean and grunt vocals. Great and truly awesome !!! Besides two vocalists we have Guy Commeene on lead guitars, Wouter Nottebaert on bass, Wouter Debonnet is taking care of the drumming part while (brother?) Martijn Debonnet is handling the strings. As Stefan Segers is also playing the strings besides the vocals, there are three guys on guitars, so the arrangements are pretty well focusing on guitars, what metalheads will adore! The musical direction of Dyscordia can be described as progressive metal with a lot of melody, but has so much more to offer, so we don’t want to pigeonhole this band as a progressive act, it’s only an innuendo.

The next track is called ‘From Sight To Black’, and again it contains great pace, with a little oriental influence in the beginning. The solos of Guy Commeene, the vocals of Piet and Stefan have a contemporary effect and again we can conclude that Dyscordia has an eye on all details! This band knows how to arrange and write good melody lines, spiced with all necessary ingredients to create a top notch product! The sound of this début is outstanding as well, and it was a good move to work with Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studio’s (Sweden). This man worked with Amon Amarth, Opeth, Soilwork, Iron Mask and Symphony X in the past, so it’s obvious that only the best counts for Dyscordia. Those that like a ballade now and then will be pleased when ‘Ache Of Hearts’ opens. This track has everything to give you goose bubs all over your skin, and especially the interaction between grunt and clean vocals prove to be a golden formula! Needless to say that the solo in this track is again fabulous! I listened to the album for days now, and if you ask my some references, I would mention Nevermore meets Evergrey meets Symphony X.

I am proud that this band worked so hard on every detail, and above all, they topped with this release my personal Belgian favoured. The Difference released ‘When Light Uncovers Grey’ in 2009 and that was my standard as high quality Metal so far. Dyscordia proved that they topped them all, and together with After All (Thrash Metal), they claim their spot with only a footstep away of international fame! De in 2010 verschenen ep Reveries van het Kortrijkse gezelschap Dyscordia kon al op veel bijval rekenen in metalland. Ik ben dus zeer benieuwd wat voor lekkers de eerste full-cd, Twin Symbiosis, voor mij in petto heeft.

De groep heeft alleszins niets aan het toeval overgelaten en liet de productie in handen van Jens Bogren die zijn sporen reeds verdiende met werk van o.a. Opeth, Katatonia, Pain Of Salvation, Symphony X en Paradise Lost. Het mag bij de eerste luisterbeurt dan ook al meteen duidelijk zijn dat de Zweed ook voor Dyscordia een vlekkeloze productie heeft afgeleverd.

En gelukkig maar want Twin Symbiosis verdient ook een klasseproductie. Er gebeurt veel, héél veel in de nummers van dit zestal waardoor dit schijfje wat groeitijd nodig heeft om alles wat in je oren wordt gejaagd te vatten en te verteren.

Opener Dreamcatcher Tree weet met zijn dissonante nervositeit de aandacht al los te weken en laat met de cleane bijna Engelse progrockzang van Piet Overstijns niets uitschijnen van wat ons te wachten te staat. Tot de eerste maten van The Empty Room je hersens inknallen en je vertrokken bent voor een wilde rit richting perfect georchestreerde muzikale chaos. The Empty Room doet me al meteen denken aan de energieke brutaliteit van Symphony X en laat voor het eerst de mooie combinatie van prog- en powermetalinvloeden op je los (met zelfs een klein snuifje folk in de gitaarmelodie) en kan gitarist Guy Commeene zich al eens flink virtuoos uitleven.

Dyscordia heeft trouwens geen gebrek aan goede combinaties: de verrassende tweestrijd tussen de zang van Piet en het gegrunt van Stefan Segers werkt perfect. Piet is dan ook nog eens gezegend met een flexibel stemgeluid dat me vooral in de hoge uithalen rillingen bezorgt (Halford !).

From Sight to Black neemt wat gas terug en wordt vooral gedragen door de mooie vocale melodie. Rise to Perception is weer van een andere orde met heel agressief riffwerk en waarvan vooral het begin mij aan Machine Head doet denken. De onregelmatige maatsoorten en ritmes geven het nummer een aangename variatie in opbouw.

Met de akoestische intro van Ache Of Hearts krijgen we een rustpunt (nou ja)in het muzikale geweld met een refrein dat in het livegebeuren zeker zijn weg zal vinden. Het contrast met het daarop volgende The Loser’s Game kan niet groter zijn, een nummer dat volop de heavy- en powermetalinvloeden in Dyscordia naar voor brengt en het meest “recht voor z’n raap”.

In Solitude blinkt dan weer uit door zijn schitterend duaal soleerwerk en een melodie die gewoon vraagt om voor eeuwig en altijd in het geheugen te blijven kleven. Locked Within is het meest progressieve, niet in het minst door de ongebruikelijke maatsoort wat dan weer de nodige ritmische uitdaging vormt voor drummer Wouter Debonnet.

Alsof dit nog niet genoeg is heeft de groep volgens mij dan nog het beste voor het laatst gehouden met het schitterende trio van Black Clown, Twin Symbiosis en My Devotion.

Vooral het prachtige titelnummer heeft me aangegrepen want vocaal is dit echt om duimen en vingers af te likken, probeer de verschillende zanglijnen die zich in en rond elkaar nestelen maar eens te volgen !

Ik kan alleen maar vaststellen dat Dyscordia mij met dit schijfje serieus heeft weten te imponeren, ons landje mag terecht fier zijn om een groep met muzikale kwaliteiten van dit kaliber te mogen afleveren.

Dyscordia levert met Twin Symbiosis een verzameling met pareltjes van nummers af, die live ook nog eens de potentie hebben om serieus te knallen. Wie houdt van progressief in combinatie met brutale maar melodische power en net dat ietsje meer zoekt in zijn dagelijkse portie metal, is met dit schijfje aan het goede adres.

Net als de grote broers in het internationale circuit, worden er met regelmaat van de klok supergroepen gecreëerd in ons kleine landje. Het zijn steeds bands met voldoende talent en ervaring aan boord die eens iets anders willen na het uiteenvallen van hun vorige bands of na muzikale onenigheden. Dyscordia is een van die bands en ze halen hun ervaring uit bands zoals IMPEDIGON, ARTRACH, BATTALION, GWYLLION. Hun muzikaal ei wilden ze liever in een nieuwe band kwijt en na de goed ontvangen EP in 2010 hebben ze nu alle registers opengetrokken om in 2013 de wereld te verbazen met hun aanstekelijk progressieve power metal. Iets waarvan we er naast THE DIFFERENCE trouwens niet veel hebben in België, dus juich!

De plaat werd opgenomen in Zweden bij Jens Bogren en staat garant voor iets minder dan een uur aan melodisch, nagenoeg perfecte power metal. Inclusief cleane vocalen, hoge uithalen, maar eveneens grunts en meezingstukken. Deze plaat heeft werkelijk alles wat je als power liefhebber wilt horen en daarnaast krijgen ze ook stilaan veel herkenning, want ze wonnen een plaatsje op PPM 2013 (Power Prog & Metal) alsook op Dokk’Em open air. De muziek zelf kan gerust als een symbiose tussen power en heavy metal gezien worden met vaak tegendraadse ritmes. Denk aan IRON MAIDEN meets AJ STURT (Iced Earth voor wie geen West-Vlaams spreekt). Duellerende gitaren, een fitte ritmesectie en een dijk van een zanger, deze jonge mannen schudden het allemaal moeiteloos uit hun mouwen.

Samen met THE DIFFERENCE zijn ze dus sowiezo al vaandeldrager van ’s vaderlandsche power metalscene en nu zijn ze met hun debuut klaar om ook het buitenland te veroveren. Beginnen in Nederland om dan naar het geboorteland van de power (Duitsland) te trekken, ik zie het helemaal positief in voor DYSCORDIA. Dat de heren dan ook nog down-to-earth zijn (leadgitarist kwam de promo afgeven aan mijn deur, much appreciated!) spreekt nog meer in hun voordeel. De wereld ligt aan hun voeten (althans, West-Vlaanderen en omstreken), nu maar hopen dat ze live ook zo overtuigen en dan zal alles wel vanzelf gaan. Het mag gerust een levende schande heten dat deze plaat in eigen beheer moest uitgebracht worden.

Hier is hij dan! Het 2de album van het Kortrijkse Dyscordia. Deze band brengt Progressive Metal op hun eigen mooie manier. Dit schijfje begon met een bijna 2 minuten durende intro die van begin tot einde ons in de spanning hield. Het album startte na de intro met het nummer The Empty Room. Deze was al meteen een schot in de roos. De band gaf het beste van zichzelf en in het bijzonder de zangers. Grunts en prachtige clean vocals, hoewel we de band zeker niet mogen buitensluiten. De stijl doet ons denken aan een mengeling van Death-, Heavy-, Progressive- en soms ook Pagen getinte metal. Wat natuurlijk een fantastische combinatie is. Dyscordia heeft een mooi schijfje afgeleverd vol met prachtige metal die zeker nog verschillende keren in onze cd speler zal worden afgespeeld.

Dyscordia is a six man strong progressive/melodic metal band from Belgium. While first listening to their eerie dark-ambient tendencies coupled with the intense, powerful riffing and hauntingly powerful vocal work I felt absolutely compelled to review this record, despite the fact that I usually don’t listen to that much metal – except for doom metal and the heavier stoner rock releases. In spite of my limited experience with the genre, I’ve found that Dyscordia’s album “Twin Symbiosis” falls surprisingly well into my personal preferences, whilst showcasing some absolutely astonishing musicianship.

Opening track “Dreamcatcher Tree” is a very eerie piece of ambient music with very little going on except for the reciting of a somewhat creepy set of lyrics, to the tones of an ambient soundscape. Despite the measly amount of ‘musical activity’ at this point, the track is captivating as one keeps thinking: “What will happen next and will it overwhelm me?” – It literally keeps the listener on the edge of the seat in anticipation of what’s to come. The following track “The Empty Room” quickly proves to be an extremely fast-paced and tremendously heavy onslaught in stark comparison to “Dreamcatcher Tree” which works out really well as the two tracks actually blend really well together as a sort of build-up to the climax effect. “The Empty Room” is surprisingly reminiscent of both Opeth, as well as Dream Theater – both in terms of overall sound as well as structure. However, while Dyscordia certainly has its share of musical talent going on, there is still quite a way to go before reaching the big league of bands like Opeth, Porcupine Tree and Dream Theater – thus far however, “Twin Symbiosis” is a quality release throughout.

Seven tracks into the album, the pace gradually slows down and the sound takes on a somewhat more mellow approach with “In Solitude”. Well, at least that was true for the intro of the song which leads up to yet another epic song full of brutal riffs and soaring vocal work. The drumming on this track, though, is what I truly think one should notice as it takes on a life of its own, constantly beefing up the track and maintaining that dynamic drive that has come to characterize the heavy-hitters of this particular genre-blend. Apart from being vastly intriguing in terms of dynamics, “In Solitude” is also incredibly catchy, with a verse that would have me singing along - were it not for my incredibly sore throat at the time of writing this review.

Long story short, Dyscordia is one of those bands that have managed to pique my interest while playing a genre of music I don’t particularly worship. What is even more impressive is that the album turned me from ‘interest’ to fandom. This little gem of an album will definitely get more plays on my stereo, that’s for sure.

Coole, abwechslungsreiche Töne aus dem Westen

Knapp zwei Jährchen ist es nun her, als DYSCORDIA mit ihrer Erstlings-EP "Reveries" auf sich aufmerksam machten. Nun gibt es mit "Twin Symbiosis" das längst überfällige, vollständige Nachfolgewerk der melodischen Power Metaller aus Belgien. Abermals treffen beim westlichen Nachbar-Sextett schnelle, druckvolle Passagen auf majestätische, mit Gefühl ausgetüftelte Melodien und eine (leider) zur Jahreszeit passenden Kälte.

Dass bei DYSCORDIA auch die Abwechslung an der Front steht, beweisen uns viele Tempowechsel, der facettenreiche Gesang sowie die vielfältigen Gitarrenparts, die die knappe Stunde Spielzeit durchaus schmackhaft machen.

Vom mysteriösen Artwork und dem unheimlichen Spieluhr-Intro eingeleitet, prischt 'The Empty Room' gleich mit Melodie, einem coolen Tempo und verspieltem Keyboards gleich drauf los. Die Zweistimmigkeit aus Growls und Cleanparts macht das Unterfangen äußerst abwechslungsreich, obwohl man sich daran bei dem gelungenen 'From Sight To Black', dem hypnotisierenden 'Rise To Perception', dem teils himmlischen 'Ache Of Hearts' sowie dem progressiven 'In Solitude' erstmal gewöhnen muss. Letztendlich sind es speziell der Refrain von Letztgenanntem und dem Doppeldecker 'Black Clown'/'Twin Symbiosis', die herausragen.

Bei unseren westlichen Nachbarn hat sich also so gut wie nichts verändert, die Stücke sind noch etwas reifer und durchdachter geworden. DYSCORDIA könnten zukünftig mit dem einen oder anderen Nachfolger dieses Kalibers sicherlich die Clubs (später Hallen) dieses Kontinents aufmischen. "Twin Symbiosis" ist definitiv ein Schritt in die richtige Richtung.

Oh Belgium … it may be a small country, but it is definitely too good to be true… That delicious chocolate, great beer and fingerlicking good waffles seem to be not enough, no sir, Belgium also has produced tons of talented and creative musicians, I know it because I’m a fan of many of them. Twin Symbiosis, by Dyscordia, is an album that I recognized as a gem from the first listening, because the band has managed to make every detail shine so much that it is impossible to ignore, both, the music and the lyrics are reflections of a perfect and harmonious chaos, maybe that’s why it has taken me longer than usual to marinate all its subtleties and come to fully understand the complex gear designed by the band.

First of all, a bit of information. Dyscordia is a six piece melodic metal band, that literally pours jets of power and heaviness over the basis of a bold and innovative progressive metal. The line up consist on Piet Overstijns on clean vocals, guitarist Martijn Debonnet, Stefan Segers on grunts and also on guitar, drummer Wouter Debonnet, Guy Commeene on lead guitars and Wouter Nottebaert on bass. All band members come from bands like Gwyllion, Artrach, Varangian, Rhymes of Destruction, Anesthesy and Impedigon. Their first EP named Reveries was released in 2010 and gave them the chance to play live with some well known bands. Now in 2013 we have Twin Symbiosis, their first full length album. which was produced in Sweden by Jens Bogren, who having worked with bands like Symphony X, Katatonia, Paradise Lost, Opeth and Pain of Salvation, among others, is also able to leave a palpable mark on the album. Few days ago the band performed at the PPM fest in Mons, Belgium, and they will also perform on Dokk’em Open Air on June this year.

Personally I didn’t know about the existence of this band until now… Ok, I may have heard about their EP, but for some very stupid and unjustified reason that I cannot remember, I didn’t stop to listen. Don’t hate me, I’ve already punished myself for that. Dyscordia is a band that should not be taken lightly. They are really good, so good it’s scary. We can conclude that this is a concept album, as the title, Twin Symbiosis, refers to the relationship of a boy and his imaginary friend, about how this child (autistic and suffering of schizophrenia) found support in his “twin”, about how the two symbionts experience the hard times together and give life to each other through their dependency. Every song explores different aspects of the child’s life, and reflects his loneliness, anger, fear and doubts in the lyrics. Now, talking about the music, the album’s intro, Dreamcatcher Tree, could cause some serious brain damage to any mortal, one of that songs that you dont want to hear in the middle of the night, but you can’t resist, because the song is so dark, and yet so simple (just the clean voice of Piet Overstijns acquiring a creepy taste and an also creepy keyboard) that immediately envelops you in its macabre and disturbing aura, everything happens in slow motion, all around you, and the lyrics wrap us under the veil of anticipation, our external sensors are gradually turned off, leaving us immersed within the endless depths of our own psyche. You better be careful here, try deserting the hypnosis before the powerful and tasty guitar riff of The Empty Room begins, because if you dont, you’ll going to jump from your seat and reach the ceiling like a poor scared cat. The song is just wild, the three guitars fulfill their purpose to bring weight and heaviness, the skills of lead guitarist Guy Commeene are palpable from the beginning (this talented guy is also responsible for the artwork of the album), the powerful grunts of Stefan Segers are shown for the first time in the album, surprising with its heaviness, and which along Piet’s form a perfect blend of violence and melody. Piet has a spectacular range, and if his sublime interpretation, especially in the high notes of this song does not reach your bone marrow or causes you, at least, goose bumps, then you should worry, because you must be dead.

From Sight to Black brings again the explosion of energy, and also a slight oriental influence that is more than welcome. The lead guitar is dynamic, while the others sound dark and powerful, solid bass and compelling drum work. A catchy chorus easily captures all the attention, and while the lyrics are raw, the solos are modern, neat and tasty. Next song, Rise to Perception, is dangerously aggressive, and you better grab to something before it makes you jump from your seat again. The song is anthological, overwhelming, and also has a deliciously varied structure with irregular rhythms that reinforce the unique style of the band and delight the ear with surprises at every turn. Ache of Hearts starts with a very short acoustic intro, to then give way to some heavy riffs throughout the song. The adrenaline decrease a little here, the vocal melody is beautiful and flows freely in the verse, and when Stefan’s effervescent grunts join the always soulful and fine voice of Piet, we can feel the intensity slashing the air with its furious whip. The solo here is vibrant and addictive. Very touching lyrics gives such an emotional charge to the song, that I wished to finish the album soon to hear it again. Well, that’s what I’d normally do if the rest of the songs weren´t worthy, but thanks to the metal gods, the album had still plenty to offer, that I was clear with The Loser’s Game, an energetic song that almost begs you to turn up the volume, very progressive, with a very interesting rhythmic and the predominance of the evil grunts. Once again, the lyrics are emotional and thoughtful.

The guys slow down their revolutions a bit with In Solitude, but only for the intro, then they keep lashing out with a merciless heaviness, sharpened riffs, top notch vocals, dynamic transicions, in short, a song extremely rich in each of its edges. And that is how the following songs Locked Within and Black Clown follow the same line of power and smart design, especially highlighting their main tasteful riffs, the voices that are in a mortal duel every second and the catchy choruses. Something I should point out is the individuality that Dyscordia pleasantly shows. Of course we could invoke some influences on their music, I personally hear a lot of Symphony X, Death, Opeth, even Dream Theater, but it would be a big mistake to try to compare them, the album has a soul and is completely original and revolutionary. Dyscordia has tattooed its name in its music. The mixture these guys make of progressive, power and heavy metal, besides their unleashed melodies, everything has the band’s name written in capital letters. The title track, Twin Symbiosis, brings a special weight on guitars, the heaviness is once more remarkable and Piet’s voice reflects pure fragility in every note. Each word in the lyrics is so heartfelt and real, that I couldn’t help myself and end up releasing a few tears in the middle of the verses. I must confess that the theme of autism and lonely children hits me too hard. My Devotion, the last track, it’s a definite highlight, the album closes majestically, when this last song derives in the same creepy melody of the intro track, sealing one of the most original and stunningly epic albums I’ve heard in a while.

This album could not have a more appropriate name, for the lyrics, and for the amalgam of genres exposed. The question here is not whether this album is for you or not, the question is: Are you for this album? Twin Symbiosis is a brutal beating to the senses, like myriads of killer bees injecting a deadly pleasure straight to your heart; as a sovereign punch in the face that makes you crave for war without even understanding why. Complex, lethal, emotional, raw, heavy, progressive; all gathered in perfect harmony. The perfect combination of turbulence, darkness, talent and speed. So If you think you can resist the inhuman attack, I have four words for you… Buy the damn album!

DYSCORDIA needs no introduction anymore, at least not for its Belgian fans. Otherwise, I'm going to repeat what I wrote in the "Reveries" review (see here). "Reveries" is the band's first release, a 6-track EP (2010). Flanders (in Belgium, yes) has spawned many great bands, though not all of them managed to acquire the deserved recognition and fame. Some of the last jewels in the region of Kortrijk are ARTRACH and GWYLLION. The first put out three demo CDs, one better than the other. The potential was clearly there to go for it big time. Sadly, ARTRACH had to quit its activities in 2009. GWYLLION put out a diamond of an album, "The Edge Of All I Know" (see my review here). But as the search for a new female vocalist has been suspended, the band sort of split (not really, but GWYLLION is not doing anything, so each is free to pursue other activities) and three other bands were linked: DYSCORDIA (with members of a.o. ARTRACH and GWYLLION), FIREFORCE and IMMANENT DISTANCE. The idea for DYSCORDIA was born in 2009, if my knowledge is right and the band was formed then in 2010.

Several gigs and lots of efforts later, the guys finally have a full-length ready, titled "Twin Symbiosis". Prior to its release, though, the band tested two of the songs live on regular occasions. For this album the recordings were done at Road Mark Studios, but for the mixing and mastering the band decided to appeal to Fascination Street Studios, home to famed producer Jens Bogren (AMON AMARTH, PARADISE LOST, OPETH, DRACONIAN, SYMPHONY X, KREATOR, and many more), who mixed "Twin Symbiosis". The mastering was done by Tony Lindgren. The artwork, like before, was done by guitarist Guy Commeene.

In a long search to find a label - many fans were already wondering since the release of the EP why the band hadn't found a label home yet - and concluding that maybe they were too good to be signed, DYSCORDIA decided to again release the album themselves. However, more recently they did obtain a distribution deal with DMI Records. Gig-wise the band participated in the PPM Fest and Dokk'um Battles and won both with ease. Sort of.

But on to the album itself, of course. It contains eleven tracks, of which four made the transfer from EP to full-length: "The Empty Room", "Ache Of Hearts", "Locked Within" and "Black Clown". This also means that "Reveries" and "Realm Of Night" were not found worthy enough to be featured as well on this new release. Sad, but these things happen. The ones that did make it were re-recorded. For the sake of ease, I have of course copy-pasted parts of what I wrote in the "Reveries" EP.

"Twin Symbiosis" begins with a spooky intro ("Dreamcatcher Tree"), its guitar melody inspired by a vocal track lead singer Piet recorded. This connects directly with the blasting melodies of "The Empty Room" come thundering out of the speakers, like barrage. Melodic guitarwork is key, dual even. Grunts and clean vocals again, like before, and Piet's taking the lead, yet allows for the growls of Stefan to come through as well when needed (e.g. chorus). Speaking of music, Power Metal! Woohoo! But it doesn't last that long. When I first this song on the "Reveries" EP, the break (just the drums, the bass guitar following, clean vocals and a clean guitar and slowly growing in Metalness. Especially the melodic guitarwork comes out beautifully!) was the element I was most critical about, as it comes in quite suddenly, where you would expect a return to the verses. But after having heard and seen it played several times, I no longer have any problems with it whatsoever. In fact, I think it's very well thought of to implement such a twist. After that it only gets better, catchier (mainly the vocal parts- awesome! Hear Piet unleashing the crazy little guy in himself), and more powerful. Definitely one of the best tracks on the album. The Folky melody is the cherry on the cake and when Piets dances to it - brilliant! Of course, you can't see that when you hear the song, but when you've seen the band live already, you know what I mean.

This brings us to another superb highlight, called "From Sight To Black", which starts off with an atmospheric, mysterious intro. Something is brewing- and then, yes, the melodic Metal breaks loose. Again there's a high focus on melodic guitar input. The contrast between the tight, though atmospheric verses with soft singing goes well with the heavier, emotional chorus. Overall the music is less brutal, so to speak, yet the way it's composed and played gives it a powerful feel. About the chorus: the layered vocals add to its emotional character and I have to admit I find it very beautiful and yes, touching. It manages to strike a chord within me. GWYLLION also had that ability, as did/do RHAPSODY (specific songs, of course), ANCIENT BARDS, LUCA TURILLI, SAVATAGE, NIGHTWISH (specific songs off the first few albums), and others. The growl/clean combo after the chorus fits splendidly. There is of course room for solos, during which the tempo goes up a bit, all adding more ROCK to the whole.

"Rise To Perception" begins with a guitar part, to unleash madness with pounding drums. But not your regular drum pattern. Vocal duties are again divided between Stefan ('growls) and Piet (cleans). Melodic guitarwork guides the pounding Metal, allowing even for a touch of Folkiness in the bridge. This reminded me of TÝR. Piet also sounds fiercer here. Other than that, Progressive Metal is indeed on offer with changing rhythms and patterns. Halfway the track this is clearly demonstrated. Somehow I consider this song to be theatrical, as it could fit in a musical of some sorts. Contrast is also created between aggressive and more emotional parts, each having its own music.

The intro of "Ache Of Hearts" certainly fits the description (calm, atmospheric, clean guitar plucking, -).  But then the power breaks loose, slowly and dangerous, shifting into straight-forward Heavy Metal-. when everything all of a sudden stops! For the clean verses, of course. I have to say, that sudden halt is indeed sudden. The song itself is another sad one and the grunts help to stress the drama of it all. The music is not as variable as before and therefore flows very well, which in turn helps ease the listening experience. The solos are well done, as usual. So, yes, another solid track in the bank. Can these guys write bad music at all? Take "The Loser's Game" for example; another superb song. Kick in directly with pounding, melodic music with a high dose of catchy playing, thanks to the triple guitar input. The tempo lies higher, there's more punch, more activity going on. Even humpa power Metal; I love it!  Growls occupy the verses, cleans reside in the bridge and layered singing is activated in the chorus, where the music flows more normally, by manner of speech. A powerful rhythmic part in combination with a movie sample leads to the solos, which in turn lead to the verses again and so on.

And the magic doesn't stop there. "In Solitude" comes into play with a clean guitar intro that isn't the happiest one. Add leadwork in vein of METALLICA's "Orion" and a bass that keeps the main rhythm and you know what to expect. Pounding melodic Metal breaks loose after this. I'm almost drooling here (figure of speech), it's this tasty indeed! The powerful and dark verses, with clean and fierce vocals, contain heavy riffing, which reminded me of NEVERMORE. The growls are present as well, Piet doesn't need to get all the credit. Like before and since melody is a key aspect in DYSCORDIA's songs, the chorus contains a good load of it. In addition and muchos kudos to the guys for this: the vocals and acompanying melodies here. Absolutely breathtaking! Dito for the fierce, pounding bridge. First class material. So mindblowing/stunning/- I have to suppress another delivery of tears. Ok, this sounds strange, but it's true. The music enters the realm of Prog once more before the solo kicks in.

"Locked Within" is a little slower, darker and more atmospheric, at least in its intro. The overall feel is a sad one, as Piet's singing indicate, as does the music. Even in the chorus there's not really a sign of happiness. Stefan's grunts cannot change that and have to follow suit. And yet the music is quite powerful. You could, in a way, compare this feeling with GWYLLION's "A Thousand Words". This contrast is well done, but I wouldn't mind the music taking indeed a more calmer direction. Vocally both clean and growls are used and the latter even become the leading ones for a while. The atmospheric keyboards deserved more attention, in my opinion. Now they're too far in the back. However, the vocals do carry the melody well enough and it's great to hear how the guitars come back into play. On the drums Wouter can't sit still. He HAS TO add a fill or something. Like George Kollias (NILE) has to (read: cannot suppress the feeling to) blast in this video - see here (and forward to 06:20). However, one complaint I have to make: over halfway there is an atmospheric vocal piece. And it sounds strange, at least to me, like it's a separate recording or something didn't go well (or went too well) in the mix. I found the EP version, with regards to this specific part, better, to be honest. Solos are laid out after this.

"Black Clown" contains a guitar lead that is so damn catchy and tasty, one could never get tired of it. Also present are double bass power and Piet singing with a more rough-edged voice. Musically it's totally GWYLLION, only with a male vocalist. Growls are done in the bridge, while Piet's cleans reclaim the throne in the chorus and Stefan's grunts are pushed to the back. Straight-forward melodic Metal is what is brought then. Three guitarists, it must be for a reason, if not just for the solo moments. And yes, it's precisely this (the guitarwork, incl. the solos) that is the center of attention, although the drums cannot be ignored, for obvious reasons. Quality material from start to finish!

The title track then. On most releases, this is one of the strongest songs. Here- well, let's say I like it a little less compared to the other songs. It starts with a bluesy guitar lick and as you can imagine, this is actually very refreshing at this stage. The music only growls in volume when the chorus is due, delivering midtempo modern Rock, you might say. It's very acessible and not as Progressive as the previous songs. But it wouldn't be DYSCORDIA without a twist. Halfway the lever goes into Metal-mode! Ingredients: heavy riffing and pounding drums. The melodic aspect remains a constant. This is, however, only a side-step, a twist indeed. The more atmospheric side of the song returns afterwards. Last but not least: "My Devotion". This is also the longest song, with almost 8 minutes of playtime. This track also kicks in directly, not time for an intro, just hit it. Midtempo, straight-forward melodic Metal (what else?) is provided. And it rocks. It's very hymnic, too. And emotional. The Prog has made its entrance again, through the rhythms and melodies. All ends around 5 minutes and a half, after which the rest is just a looped piano melody, sounding like there is no hope anymore, all is lost. Or, the beginning of something new? A new chapter in life, leave behind the old stuff? This is one of the more bombastic tracks, so do give it several spins to appreciate it all better.

DYSCORDIA, saviours and flag bearers of Progressive/Power Metal in Belgium, have not only conquered many stages and won many battles, they have also created a weapon of mass persuasion called "Twin Symbiosis". Three melodic battle axes, a thundering rhythm section and powerful vocals to turn the knob in your mind and convert you to the church of DYSCORDIA. Progressive Power Metal of very high quality that should leave no label blind to its supreme compositions. Alas, many still are. But fear not, for DMI Records will help you to join the band in their battle for world domination - well, Europe first. Or you can decide to purchase from the band themselves (see their website for info). In any case, all jokes aside, "Twin Symbiosis" is a masterpiece and therefore heavily recommended!

Wie het gene dat moet doorgaan als de Belgische metalscene een beetje volgt, kan niet rond Dyscordia. Een nieuwe band, maar als je kijkt naar de adelbrieven die haar leden kunnen voorleggen, dan zie je een royaal collectief. Artrach, Gwyllion, Skeptical Mood, Impedigon… we hebben hier met ervaren rotten te doen en neem het aan van een getuige: dat hoor je gewoon tijdens hun indrukwekkende live-prestatie. Kan je dit dan een debuut noemen?

Een cd’tje inspelen hoef je hen echt niet te leren en als je dan weet dat ze Jens Bogren en Tony Lindgren zover kregen om de mix- en masterhonneurs waar te nemen, tja, dan kon Twin Symbiosis amper fout gaan. Die twin, de tweeling, die hoor je overal in terug. Vocaal zingen en bulderen de equivalenten van de Rob Halford-ijzerrasp en de Johan Hegg-krijgsbrul elkaar aan als een eeneiige tweeling. Een gitaardrieling pakt tegelijk uit met knetterende melodynamische snaaroproeringen en kwikzilveren leadstrengen die als vanzelf samensmelten. Tot een melodieuze symbiose als het ware. Die andere tweeling, de ritmesectie, gooit de beuk erin en eruit wanneer dat organisch juist voelt en laat een paar coupletten kwiek uit de krammen schieten, zoals in supersongs The Loser’s Game en In Solitude.

Ten slotte is er nog de tweeling uit het conceptverhaal, wiens relatie zich erg knap weerspiegelt in de mood van de songs. Soms wordt het wat té lief, vooral de zoete balladeaanzetten met popzang en fijne flintermelodietjes, dat zullen we maar op het powermetalverleden steken. Van tweelingen hoor je wel eens dat ze elkaar blind aanvoelen en als je de drijvende energie waarmee de melodieuze frisheid en vocale synergie elkaar hier aanvullen over je heen laat komen, zou je het nog gaan geloven ook.

Drie jaar geleden leverde het Belgische Dyscordia met de EP 'Reveries' zijn eerste release af. Anno 2013 is het eindelijk tijd voor een volwaardig album: 'Twin Symbiosis'. En dat is bepaald geen kattenpis. Goed, opener 'Dreamcatcher Tree' valt onder het kopje 'nietszeggend', maar de daaropvolgende 56 minuten trekken de heren een blik melodische progmetal open waar menig band in onze gezamenlijke lage landen nog wel een puntje aan kan zuigen. De ervaring die de zes leden in hun vorige bands hebben opgedaan betaalt uit in Symphony X-achtig riffwerk, een gezonde dosis stijl- en tempowisselingen en sterke vocale prestaties. Vooral in de eerste nummers maakt het vlugge vingerwerk van het snarenplukkende trio een uitstekende indruk, terwijl zanger Piet Overstijns met zijn nasale cleane zang en sporadische Rob Halford-imitaties het hele album een kwalitatief constante factor is. Maar... hoewel de heren nergens grote steken laten vallen, missen ze op het tweede deel van het album de scherpte om de luisteraar aan de boxen gekluisterd te houden. Nummers als 'Locked Within' (hoor ik daar Oceans of Sadness?) en het titelnummer 'Twin Symbiosis' zijn catchy, maar te vlak in vergelijking met de intense openingsnummers. Feit blijft echter dat 'Twin Symbiosis' als geheel overeind blijft en dat de band met deze release op het 'te volgen'-lijstje gezet dient te worden. Een prima debuut.

Bereits ihre "Reveries"-EP weckte meine Neugier, nun liegt mit "Twin Symbiosis" also endlich das Album-Debüt von DYSCORDIA vor. Stilistisch gibt es dabei keine Überraschungen, noch immer herrschen Progressivität und eine angenehme Härte vor. Kein Wunder, denn immerhin hielten vier der sechs EP-Stücke auch auf dem Silberling Einzug.

Angesichts der Qualität von Song-Perlen wie dem Gänsehaut-Ohrwurm "Ache Of Hearts" ist dies auch absolut legitim, zumal die Stücke im runderneuerten Soundgewand erstrahlen. Für dieses zeichnet Jens Bogren verantwortlich, der einen exzellenten Job abgeliefert hat und die Stücke transparent, aber stets mit dem nötigen Biss versehen in Szene setzt.

Im ersten Moment wirken die Songs etwas überladen, vereinen sie doch Elemente der verschiedensten Musikstile in sich. Hat man sich aber erst einmal in die Scheibe hineingehört, ergibt alles einen Sinn. Da funktioniert auch der Wechsel zwischen Growls und Clean-Gesang hervorragend, während das Riffing von melodischem Heavy/Power-Metal bis hin zu knüppelhartem Death/Thrash-Attacken reicht.

Langeweile ist während der knappen Stunde Spielzeit ausgeschlossen. Immer wieder überraschen DYSCORDIA mit schönen Melodien oder eingängigen Grooves. Dabei klingen sie eigenständig genug, um sich einen Platz in der internationalen Prog-Metal-Szene verdient zu haben. Zwar könnte mancher Song noch etwas zwingender komponiert sein, dem rundum positiven Gesamteindruck tut dies aber keinen Abbruch.

L’arrache coeur

L’activité de chroniqueur est pleine de surprises... Elle peut nous faire croiser des bouses infâmes, elle peut nous donner à écouter des pépites annoncées et reconnues et elle peut aussi nous faire vivre des moments de pure grâce, de félicité absolue. Twin Symbiosis se situe dans cette dernière catégorie.

Ce disque est miraculeux, preuve peut-être que la passion de la musique est vivace et immortelle chez certains. Ces musiciens élaborent une musique inespérée, attendue depuis peut-être la sortie du Dead Or Dreaming de Into Eternity... Le groupe officiant dans le registre metal progressif s'est focalisé non pas sur la technique - même si elle est présente - mais sur la mélodie. Bien entendu une guitare rythmique impériale domine ce patchwork. Elle délivre des riff techniques et porte des mélodies magnifiques. En solo elle est véloce et fluide, toutes les capacités du guitariste sont au service de l'efficacité harmonique.

Les voix sont tout simplement extraordinaires. Dans le registre clair on perçoit une pointe de Geoff Tate époque Operation: Mind Crime, pour la facette grunt elle est un croisement entre Mikael Åkerfeldt et Dan Swano. Le grunt est mélodique et se développe conjointement à la voix claire ; les cris se font lyriques, pour inverser les rôles et ainsi mettre en lumière une voix claire agressive. Merci aux musiciens pour ce travail sur les vocaux: la douceur et la rage s’épousent, l’ombre et la lumière se côtoient. Quant à la section rythmique, elle habille les compositions de grandeur et d'épaisseur et leur confère un supplément d’âme qui les place au dessus du lot.

Vous vous délecterez de l'improbable Dreamcatcher Tree avec ses harmonies élaborées et sa mélodie étrange ; vous serez émus par Ace of Hearts aux mélodies vocales imparables ; vous vous délecterez de My Devotion et ses multiples rebondissements ; vous bougerez la tête sur le très entraînant Locked Within aux mesures asymétriques.

Enfin ! Voilà un bain de jouvence pour nos oreilles trop habituées aux errances technico-progressives... C'est aussi une grande claque dont on ne ressort pas indemne... Cerise sur le gâteau, les compositions suivent un concept qu'il vous reste à découvrir.

Un album grandiose... jetez-vous dessus comme si votre vie en dépendait!

Onze Zuiderburen hebben er een serieuze metal band bij! Na de release van een EP in 2010 brengt de band nu met 'Twin Symbiosis' haar eerste full length release uit. En dat is niet zomaar een release. De band vond niemand minder dan Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia) bereid om dit album op te nemen. Dat schept verwachtingen. En worden deze waargemaakt vraagt U? Ja, eigenlijk wel. Dit is een volwassen release met uitstekende progressieve metal.

Muzikaal zit Dyscordia meer dan goed in elkaar. Meer dan uitstekend gitaarwerk ('Black Clown' is vet!), een perfecte afwisseling van grunts -en cleane zang ('Rise To Perception'), fraai geïntegreerde Oosterse melodieën ('From Sight To Black'), vette up tempo (thrash!) metal ('The Loser's Game') en muzikale krachtpatserij in nagenoeg alle tracks. De complexe riffs en melodieën klinken allemaal transparant en daardoor toch redelijk toegankelijk, ook voor niet geoefende luisteraars. Het enige puntje van kritiek wat ik kan bedenken is dat er wat mij betreft nog iets meer afwisseling in de muziek mag komen. De elf nummers duren langer dan een uur en ik merk dat mijn aandacht gaandeweg de rit wat verslapt. Tip: luister nog maar eens naar hoe Opeth er altijd in slaagt om elementen toe te voegen en daarmee de aandacht van de luisteraar weten vast te houden. Dat moet Dyscordia ook kunnen, dat weet ik zeker. Verder louter complimenten.

In Kortrijk (België) is er een samenwerking van muzikanten ontstaan, waaruit Dyscordia gegroeid is. De Belgische band komt dit jaar met zijn debuut ‘Twin Symbiosis’. De band is ontstaan uit verschillende andere bands, te noemen Gwyllion, Artrach, Varangian, Rhymes of Destruction, Anesthesy en Impedigon. In 2010 waren er zes nummers opgenomen en uitgegeven als ‘Reveries’. In samenwerking met Jens Bogren (Opeth, Amon Amarth, Soilwork, Paradise Lost a.o.) is de band de studio ingegaan om te werken aan ‘Twin Symbiosis’, waarmee zij de wereld aan hun voeten proberen te brengen.

‘Twin Symbiosis’ heeft met “Dreamcatcher Tree” een mysterieus begin. Het intro klinkt wat duister en brengt deze sfeer ook goed over. De zang in het intro maakt het nog wat mysterieuzer dan dat het begon. Dan gaat de intro explosief over in “The Empty Room”, waarbij er een aanstekelijke melodie geopend wordt en de muziek niet duister meer is. De verrassingen zijn nog niet over als grunts het nummer beginnen, wat later overgaat in clean zang. Al zeker vier elementen variaties in nog geen vier minuten, dat belooft wat voor het verdere verloop.

De muziek van de band klinkt als geheel wat progressief, maar is zeker niet te vergelijken met bands die daadwerkelijk in het vakje ‘progressief’ gestopt worden. Los van elkaar zijn er de ruige gitaarrifs, bedekt met een aanstekelijke melodie, wat ook goed gedaan kan worden met drie gitaristen. Dit zou de jonge versie kunnen zijn van Iron Maiden sinds ‘Brave New World’, uiteraard op de grunts na, maar de muziek leent zich er zeker vol. Overigens zijn de grunts en clean zang prima geplaatst in de nummers en zitten goed vermengd in de muziek, er is geen element dat de ander overstemt.

Met “Ache Of Hearts” gaat het wat kalmer aan, maar de muziek blijft toch sterk overkomen. Dat is zeker de kracht achter Dyscordia. De solo’s van de band zijn ook van hoge klasse, die goed in de nummers verwerkt zijn. Er zijn bands die solo’s maken voor het maken van solo’s, maar niet hier. De arrangementen zijn zorgvuldig uitgewerkt.

Ondanks dat de muziek goed in elkaar zit en het album zeker wel interessant blijft, is het toch alsnog veel van hetzelfde. Het is vooral de energie van de individuele nummers die het verschil maken, wat overigens ook een kunst is. “In Solitude” is bijvoorbeeld zo’n nummer dat niet echt anders is, maar wel een andere sfeer bezit dan de andere nummers. Het klinkt net wat ruiger en harder. “Locked Within” gaat verder in het ruige, maar heeft dan weer een meer rustige sfeer dan zijn voorganger. Het is interessant om te zoeken naar wat het verschil nu precies maakt. Overigens is het titelnummer wel echt anders, hier wordt de, zoals ik het noem, wat zweverige rock, gecombineerd met de metal van Dyscordia. Maar wat mij echt raakt is het einde van “My Devotion”, dat eindigt met emotionele keyboardklanken en dan nog overgaat in het mysterieuze, zoals in het intro van het album; afsluiten in stijl.

Conclusie:

Al met al levert Dyscordia hier een pracht album af. ‘Twin Symbiosis’ is een debuut waar velen alleen van kunnen dromen. Uiteraard zal de ervaring van de mannen hier in meegespeeld hebben, maar de creativiteit is hier goed te proeven. Het album straalt eenheid uit, net als dat de mannen zonder meer een eenheid vormen om Dyscordia tot een succes te maken. De eerste mijlpaal is gelegd met ‘Twin Symbiosis’.
